Sacred Music Consultation

At the Sacred Music Institute of America, we understand the unique pastoral and musical needs of parish communities. Many pastors desire to enhance the beauty and dignity of their liturgies, but may be unsure of the resources available to them. Our consultations empower priests to thoroughly assess the liturgical and musical needs of their parishes. By inviting music directors to participate, we promote a collaborative and informed approach that enhances the overall worship experience.

We are here to support, inspire, and offer tailored direction that aligns with the Church's guidance on sacred music found in pivotal documents, including Musicam Sacram and the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, while helping you to strengthen your existing music program.

How We Can Help

  • Support Music Directors in refining their leadership and musicianship, helping them select from appropriate resources, and fostering their understanding of the Church’s rich musical tradition.

  • Offer enrichment for current organists, helping them expand their liturgical repertoire, refine service-playing techniques, instruct them on proper service improvisation, and deepen their understanding of the organ's role in sacred worship.

  • Identify hidden musical talents within your parish, such as in-house pianists who may be interested in transitioning to the organ with our structured and supportive training program. They could be trained and grow into your organist without needing to leave.

  • Encourage Choir Directors to foster vibrant, prayerful ensembles through accessible and skill-building approaches.

  • Offer training for Cantors, helping them grow in confidence, liturgical understanding, and musical excellence.

  • Equip clergy who wish to chant the liturgy more effectively, offering personal instruction and practical tools for integrating chant into daily and Sunday worship.

We recognize that every parish is different. Our program is never a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we listen carefully, offer thoughtful observations, and propose options rooted in practicality and a deep respect for the sacred music tradition.

If you think now is the right time to explore possibilities, please contact us, and we can schedule a meeting with you.

Are Sacred Music Degrees Necessary?

"J. S. Bach, today considered one of the great masters of Baroque music, did not hold an academic degree and received most of his musical training from relatives."

What is Certification?

Unlike degree programs, our certification programs are shorter and focus on practical, career-oriented skills outcomes. Many church musicians do not need an academic degree, making certification a more accessible and relevant option. It is an organized, comprehensive study that is directly focused on what you need to do your job in a church setting. It includes coursework, private lessons, liturgical resources training, assessments, and mentoring from faculty with extensive experience in sacred music. Upon successful completion, you will receive a certificate that demonstrates your proficiency, along with a video portfolio. Certification is ideal for individuals seeking to enhance their skills, transition into a new career, or meet the requirements for a new or existing position.

Mentorship

We are not a one size fits all program. Mentoring musicians and their parish’s specific needs is at the root of our mission here at the Sacred Music Institute of America, and this is provided by our lesson and curriculum faculty. This innovative one-on-one approach sets us apart from everyone else and allows the student to get the most out of this program. Learn more by visiting our Mentoring & Transformation page.
