                  Dr. Rebecca Abbott

Rebecca L. Abbott holds a BMus from Wheaton College with studies in voice, organ, music theater, and English literature; an MA in liturgy and the arts from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, with additional studies in sacred music with Julian Wachner and Carl Daw at Boston University; a DWS from the Institute for Worship Studies; and certification in Musikgarten, for children from birth to age nine. Areas of study include the integration of music and text in congregational song, the Oxford/Cambridge movements of the 1800s, and theological aesthetics. She also enjoys translating and versifying texts and working with musicians in French- and German-speaking countries. Her “Royal Requiem” was recorded by the Mount Vernon University Goliards in 2017; "As a Matter of Fancy," her 2023 solo album of original compositions, can be heard through links at rebeccaabbott.hearnow.com. Active as a performer, guest lecturer, and songwriter, Abbott serves as organist at Gay Street United Methodist Church (Mount Vernon, Ohio) and as accompanist and music theater director at Kenyon College. She has volunteered for the American Guild of Organists for many years, including as dean of the Columbus, Ohio, chapter.
